Description

Your mission: launch a rocket to Mars. Your real challenge: transform how your IT team thinks, works and delivers.

MarsLander® is an immersive business simulation that takes teams on a mission to Mars and uses that high-stakes scenario to explore how to evolve from traditional IT service management into a more Agile, Lean and integrated way of working.

Set in a simulated Mission Control environment, MarsLander® creates a safe space for your team to experiment, reflect and discover better ways of collaborating, managing workload, responding to change and delivering value, then walk away with concrete actions to apply in your real organization.

Delivered by ITSM Hub's expert facilitators at your premises or via virtual classroom, this workshop is fully customizable.

Why experiential learning?

Many organizations have invested heavily in ITIL® and ITSM, but struggle to move from a reactive, process-heavy culture to one that is Agile, Lean and genuinely customer-focused.

MarsLander® addresses exactly that challenge. Rather than telling teams how to change, it puts them in a scenario where they feel the consequences of their current ways of working and experience the difference that Agile and Lean practices make, round by round.

The reflection periods between rounds are where the real learning happens, surfacing insights, agreeing improvements, and connecting the simulation directly to participants' own workplace.

About the simulation

Developed by GamingWorks, global leaders in serious business simulations - MarsLander® runs as a series of rounds in a simulated Mission Control environment.

The mission is clear: launch a rocket with the MarsLander on board, bring it to Mars, and collect valuable data for Universities and Research Centers. Your team's role is to support the Mission Centre in achieving all mission goals.

Participants take on specific roles across the Mission Support Team, Development Team and vendor relationships, including Support Engineers, Test Engineers, Change Management, Application Developers and a Service Manager. Each role has defined tasks, responsibilities and authority. Teams must discuss, agree and organize how they will work together, and then experience the results.

As the simulation progresses through multiple rounds, participants learn to apply Integrated Service Management, combining proven ITSM capabilities with Lean, Agile and DevOps practices to resolve issues, respond to new demands and continuously improve. The facilitator guides reflection between rounds, helping teams connect the simulation experience to their own working environment and agree on concrete takeaways.

What will your team experience and learn?

Core outcomes include:

  • How to build high-performing service teams and what makes them effective

  • How to visualize work using Kanban and increase flow

  • How to integrate vendors effectively into service delivery

  • How to work more closely with development — reducing the gap between Dev and Ops

  • How to continuously improve services and build a culture of improvement

  • How to become a flexible service organization that responds rapidly to changing demands

  • How to develop genuine customer-centric thinking across the team

  • How to manage end-to-end workload effectively and reduce unplanned work

  • How to increase both customer and employee satisfaction

How does this connect to your ITSM training?

MarsLander® is the ideal complement to ITIL® Foundation training. We can run this simulation as a standalone team workshop, or schedule it as a follow-on day immediately after your ITIL® Foundation course, so participants experience and experiment with the concepts they've just learned, in a safe environment, before returning to their organizsation.

Who should attend?

MarsLander® is designed for IT practitioners at any level across Software Development, Operations and IT Service Management. It is especially valuable for:

  • ITSM and IT operations teams who have completed ITIL® training and want to apply it

  • Teams exploring the shift from traditional ITSM to Agile and Lean ways of working

  • DevOps teams looking to improve integration between Dev, Ops and service management

  • Leaders and managers building a culture of continuous improvement

  • Cross-functional IT teams who want to improve collaboration and reduce silos

  • Any team experiencing high volumes of unplanned work, poor flow or reactive service delivery

No prerequisites. A basic understanding of ITSM is helpful but not required.

  • Can we run MarsLander® after our ITIL® training?
