Frequently Asked Questions

  • How is the SDM different from the SDA course?

The SDA (Service Desk Analyst) course is designed for front-line analysts and focuses on the skills needed to deliver excellent customer support. The SDM course is designed for managers and supervisors and covers the full strategic, operational and leadership toolkit for running a service desk. The SDM runs for 4 days (vs. 3 for SDA) and carries a higher investment, reflecting its broader and more advanced scope

  • Do I need the SDA certification before attending SDM?

No, the SDA is not a prerequisite for SDM. The courses serve different audiences and can be attended independently. However, if you're a service desk manager who has not previously undertaken formal training in service desk practices, completing the SDA first can provide a useful analytical foundation.

  • Is 3 years of experience really necessary?

It is strongly recommended, not mandatory. The course is most effective for participants who can contextualise the management frameworks and strategic content against real workplace experience. Candidates with less experience may find some of the more advanced leadership, financial and strategic content more challenging to apply without that grounding.

  • How is the exam structured?

The SDM exam is 60 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes, administered online with live proctoring. An exam review session is built into the 4-day course to help you consolidate your learning and prepare. A passing mark of 65% is required.

  • Is the SDM certification internationally recognised?

Yes. The SDI Service Desk Manager certification is globally recognised and awarded by PeopleCert, one of the world's leading examination bodies. It is respected across the IT service management industry worldwide.
